In September, I was fortunate to attend a three-week painting course, "Pattern and Fragmentation", with Stephen Westfall at the Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Snowmass, CO. The Ranch is situated in a beautiful spot in the mountains, and the natural beauty of the area is one of many reasons to take a class there. I arrived in CO just as the aspen trees were showing their first touches of gold.
The class was a wonderful journey into painting and into each student's interests and process. Stephen helped us to frame our explorations within the context of modern and contemporary painting. His wide knowledge of both art history and current artists re-awakened my desire to learn more about the history of my medium, to read more deeply, and to simply see more art.
It was a real pleasure to spend an intensive couple of weeks in the company of other artists doing nothing else but making, talking, and dreaming art. I'm grateful for the opportunity and I hope to return soon!
